Fishing Fleet

What happened

The flight from Buenos Aires took just over two hours, and we arrived in the afternoon. Mar Del Plata is a seaside resort with a casino, and beautiful well-groomed beaches. This is a favorite destination for vacationing South Americans, and the peak of their summer season had just passed, so the atmosphere was quiet and very relaxing.

Invigorating Ocean Air

MDP is famous for many things, not the least being the fishing fleet. The coast is rich in many ways, and although some reports claim overfishing, fresh fish is available daily.

I certainly enjoyed it and had black hake several times. Yum!!

There is also a large seal population and several walruses were hanging around.

This old fellow slumbered in the sun as people walked around him.

The occasional minstrel entertained, and some craftspeople people peddled their wares. The little shops on the piers sold fresh fish, shells, fishing gear, bait and anything else one expects to find in marina areas.

Plump, sun-ripened tourists are sometimes seen sunning themselves. The one shown to the left also sauntered down to the waters edge, and dipped his toes in the Atlantic for a temperature check, but decided the water temperature was a tad too much on the chilly side for a complete immersion.

Fine stone jetties jut out evenly spaced along the coastline to diminish beach erosion. There are several of them, and they are attractive and look very well constructed.

After all the hiking, climbing, driving and flying this was going to be more in the order of rest and relaxation. "Down at the shore" describes Mar Del Plata to a tee.

The beaches

are wide and very clean and well groomed.
